Meet Brooklyn’s Coolest Style Duo

Last updated:

AlexAndrogynous, a.k.a bestie, style duo sharing the same name, has one of the coolest instagram feeds out. The Holy Grail of inspiration, Tumblr, that is, led me to a photo shoot for the brand ONEDNA, which was produced and modeled by the two Alexes. Eventually we connected and the rest is style obsessed history. I got chatty with Lady Alex, in which I began with a compliment to their handle. As you may know, one’s social media tag is of pivotal importance when sharing content with the world. As perfect as theirs is, Alex let me know that coming up with their name “honestly… took a while. I met [guy] Alex at our local haunt, Bootleg, in Bushwick and we started brainstorming. We wanted our name to reflect our similarities [like] our first name and our vast differences. We needed something all-encompassing. We literally took pen to paper and after many hours we came up with, what now seems so glaringly obvious, Alexandrogynous.” But before deciding on a title, they had to first, agree to tackle the world fashion together.

They're also on Facebook.

They’re also on Facebook.

While girl Alex, with her film production background, was “in-between projects, twiddling thumbs, and [in need] of a new something,” she got hold of her stylist friend and shared with him her ideas. He was all in and their “brother-sister like relationship” has since helped them create a balance conducive to their working relationship. Girl Alex is hardworking and admittedly “somewhat of an extremist,” while guy Alex likes do things steadily. Aside from seeking a new outlet, “collecting clothing” and having “expensive taste as a pre-teen” was encouragement enough for girl Alex to begin a new style venture. She adds: “I had all these beautiful pieces with nowhere to wear them. I had Alexander Wang, and Chloe dresses with the tags still on them. It was ridiculous.” However, taking fashionable, editorialesque photos is not the end-all, be-all for these two. They have high hopes, which girl Alex attributes to her long-held dream of running her own company.

“I truly want to form this into a collective. Every designer, photographer, MUA, hair stylist, model that we have worked with I want to work with them again and again. I want this to be a community where larger companies come to us for superb work while we produce our own work as well. Instead of one photo-shoot a week, I want there to be six or seven, and Alex and I don’t have to be in every one of them.”

Their collaborative spirit extends to all areas of the creative industry, though, as they are also looking to “find a strong journalist to work with… We are looking for someone to start the writing portion of our blog,” but not just any blog writer will do. The Alexandrogynous writer has to exemplify their brand. Furthermore, they “want an interviewer” who allows the “talent’s story to be heard-the local designer, the photographer-their stories interest me, and that’s what I want to highlight.”

Their introduction to me was through a collab with a unisex clothing line. It made me consider how similar approaches to design are having a moment. Discussions on sexual fluidity are definitely influencing designers to go for it. Alex expanded on this idea: “we are all for it… our namesake practically lends itself to sexual fluidity. Alex and I knew that we wanted to work with more local designers. It was bound to happen that we work with the talented Travis Weaver of ONEDNA.”

And there you have it! Fashion is about the coming together of various creative realms. Alexandrogynous has made this a part of their brand and I’m excited to see where they go next. They are proof that fashion doesn’t have to be rigid and that it’s okay to collaborate.

Be sure to follow them at @alexandrogynous as they document some serious style.
