Merch Carnival: A Shopping Guide For Islanders Abroad

Last updated:

The Caribbean Diaspora is comprised of many nations, all with distinct cultures that natives tend to be very proud of. You’ve probably heard a saying or seen a meme somewhere charging Island people as the most nationalist of all groups. That would be true! It’s not rare for us to live elsewhere – be it permanently or semi-permanently – for educational or career opportunities. This means Caribbean immigrants spend a lot of time away from the place they call home, the one place where your accent doesn’t make you an enigma and your favorite foods are easily found. When you are scattered across the globe, holding on to your culture has a much deeper meaning. Our pride helps to keep us connected with our culture, as well as with others who share this experience. Ashleé Douglas, born and raised in St. Croix, recognized the importance of this diasporic connection and created Merch Carnival to serve all the island gyals and bwoys like her.

According to the founder, Merch Carnival “is an online experience that connects fans to the Caribbean culture and Carnival experience that they love.” The longing for home is especially difficult during the holiday season. So, I have curated some of my favorite Merch Carnival products sure to make the Islander in your life feel the island vibes.
